In its Christmas Appeal focusing on mental health the Guardian is featuring an interview with Jonny Benjamin who ran a campaign in January, Find Mike, to locate the man who had talked him out of committing suicide.

In the interview Jonny also talks about what a psychotic episode feels like and answers questions from readers. Here’s part of his advice: “It gets better. For a long time I felt like I would not recover, especially in those early weeks and months after my diagnosis. With the right medication and therapy I was able to get better. Writing was a great help to me during this time. It’s important to find an outlet, especially if you’re struggling to talk as I was. I also remember putting pressure on myself to recover quickly and to return to the normality I once knew; but neither of these are helpful at all. Everyone’s recovery is so individual and should be taken at their own pace. My motto was and still is, “fall down seven times, stand up eight” – it’s a Japanese proverb. Remember that you will eventually begin to feel well again.”
